Orthopaedic technologists (OT) are health care professionals who assist the orthopaedic surgeon in the practice of medicine. The OT is an expert in the complexity of plaster and synthetic cast application and has the skill to remove casts with care and fragility. The OT is able to fit and adjust canes, crutches, walkers, slings, and other durable medical equipment as well as giving patient instruction on their proper use. Other important responsibilities of the OT are the ability to apply braces, prosthetics, perform minor adjustments and repairs, as well as fabricate splints for various conditions under the direction of the orthopaedic surgeon.
